Natalie Portman smoking and video

I don't know about you, but when the Star Wars movies came out a few years back all I could think of was Natalie Portman smoking.  Of course the movies were quite entertaining, but there was just something about Queen Amidala potentially smoking.

Unfortunately everything pointed to her not smoking.  In fact, she seemed quite against it in the press.  Things were to change quickly though.

By the time the final Star Wars movie hit theatres Natalie Portman was a smoker.  She had smoked onscreen in Closer, True and Free Zone.  She sure took to smoking in a hurry.  Not shy to be filmed onscreen smoking at all. She has already smoked in 7 different movies!

Natalie smoking in Closer

Natalie Portman was also snapped smoking on the street several times as well.  There are pictures all over the internet of Natalie Portman smoking.

One scene in particular sticks in my mind.  A wonderful light-up scene in Free Zone where the driver asks Natalie if she will light a cigarette for her.  The result is a wonderful close up of a Natalie Portman light-up.  Here is the video:

Natalie has five more movies coming out over the next year and a half so we can only expect more smoking scenes from one of Hollywood's young stars. Leave us a comment and tell us what you think!

  1. I find both her on-screen and real life public smoking very disappointing. Somehow she always came off as more intelligent than this, for me anyway. I'm surprised. I would tend to avoid her movies now.

  2. She had one of the most revealing quotes about smoking ever. It reveals that she obviously was already a smoker at 19, although she denies it, and why. "When she smokes in the film, it looks so beautiful".
It speaks also to the topic here, glamour. It should be mentioned that Audrey Hepburn, if you know it or not, was among the most important and influential woman in terms of every possible aspect of style and femininity post WWII.

"I guess the most glamorous film image for many girls is Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's. The way she looked and carried herself was wonderful. When she smokes in the film, it looks so beautiful, although I've never smoked in my life because I know that it's horrible for you. Even though I love the way it looks when she smokes, I don't think movies should glamorize smoking", Barnes & Noble Interview, Sep. 26, '00"

The back and forth is precious, beautiful, terrible, love the way it looks. Of course she was a smoker then, at 19, in 2000.
